Hollow Sections

Hollow structural sections are metal profiles with hollow cross sections on the inside. They are some of the significantly more versatile, dependable and economical forms of steel that can be used for plenty of mechanical and building applications.

Interestingly, hollow sections make up a large percentage of structural foundations these days. Hollow sections have been used in iconic structures such as:

• Shopping centres
• Football stadiums
• Rollercoasters
• Domes

Steel hollow sections can take the form of circular, rectangular or square shapes. Each type of hollow section has unique attributes that make them fit for specific purposes.

The wall thickness (in other words the thickness of the steel that’s been rolled) can take varying sizes. This means that you can find a rectangular hollow section (RHS) for example, with a diameter of 42.4mm but with wall thicknesses of anything from 2mm to 4mm. Be aware though, the higher the wall thickness, the greater the weight of the bar.
