Circular Hollow Sections
Circular Hollow Sections, or CHS as they are commonly stylised, are the original and most consistent hollow section since its inception. Unlike Square Hollow Sections and Rectangular Hollow Sections, CHS is more of a tube.
The most common form of connection are when the bracings of a frame are shaped to fit the circumference of the CHS tube, and then welded.
Most frequently used in structural and construction projects, CHS also makes a good architectural choice due to its overall aesthetic appearance. Its clean and consistent lines, smooth finish and lack of overhanging edges combine to make this one of the most popular choice of hollow section. They are arguably the most aesthetically appealing hollow section.
Circular sections are typically easier to bend compared to other cold formed hollow sections. Like any hollow section, it acts as a good substitute for other steel profiles due to its strength and stability. CHS tubes are able to resist great amounts of torsion, due to its uniform position about the polar axis. CHS also offer a significant advantage for use in building structures exposed to high wind or water currents.
